• Tolerance- this can occur with any benzodiazepine. With Ativan, after 4-6 months, the drug is not shown to continue working. Meaning after this period of time, chances are, continued use would not have the desired effect. This does not mean, however, that use should be stopped abruptly. Doing so can cause symptoms of withdrawal which include severe anxiety, which most cases, was what the drug was being used for to begin with.

Drowsiness/reduced alertness: People taking lorazepam should not drive a car or perform hazardous tasks until they determine that this medication does not impair their ability to perform these tasks safely. Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can increase the drowsiness effects of this medication.

Lung disease: People with underlying lung disease (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep apnea) should discuss with their doctor how this medication may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of this medication, and whether any special monitoring is needed.
